The University of Maryland is a public research university in College Park, Maryland, eight miles from Washington D.C. It was founded in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College. The state of Maryland took control of the school in 1916 and renamed it Maryland State College. In 1920, the school merged the Baltimore business facility and the College Park location to become the University of Maryland. Today, the University of Maryland is the largest university in Maryland with over 37,000 students with over 26,000 undergraduate students and nearly 11,000 postgraduate students. It is known as a public school with an Ivy League quality of education.

University of Maryland offers 127 undergraduate degrees and 112 graduate degrees in 13 different colleges and schools. The campus of the University of Maryland is known for its red brink Georgian style buildings. The 1250 acre campus has been designated as arboretum and botanical garden due to large amount of trees and special garden plantings. McKeldin Mall is the center of campus and where the majority of older buildings are located. The University of Maryland is also known for creating and promoting a campus sustainability program.

There are two main residential areas on campus: North and South Campus. These campuses are then divided into a total of seven residential communities. The North Campus has three residential communities with a total of 12 residential dormitories. South campus has 4 communities with a large amount of residential hall, upper-class dorms, and apartment style living facilities.
